Description
Fruit-body closed globose, with 7-12 pointed rays, Ø 4-10 cm. Lower surface of the rays grey, with attached soil. Inner surface light buff or brownish to dull white or light grey-brown. Sphere Ø 15-30 mm, with a clearly demarcated stem, with a ciliate opening, mealy, light grey or cream to brownish or dark grey.

Occurrence
On rich calcareous sandy soils in broad-leaved woods (Ash and Elm) and dune scrub.
Saprophyte.
