Description
Less than 1cm: Use magnifying glass.
Fruit-body iregularly crust-like, covering up to many square dm, mealy pruinose when young, light bluish grey with white growth zone, later dark grey to black, covered with scattered papillae. Perennial, stroma black, crumbly.
Occurrence
At the base of the stem and on the main roots of living broad-leaved trees, favouring Beech and Lime, often down to below ground level, also saprophytic on remaining stumps.
