Description
Less than 1cm: Use magnifying glass.
Fruit-body spherical to pear-shaped with papilla, Ø 0.2-0.3-mm. Perithecia smooth, scarlet with dark papilla, solitary on bare wood, or breaking through the barks in groups.

Occurrence
On the bark of broad-leaved trees (Beech, Poplar, Elm, Maple). Causes a disease in combination with attack by scale insect Cryptococcus fagi.
Parasitic.
