Conical Morel
(Finger-like Morel, or Smooth Thimble Cap)
Description
Fruit-body 5-15 cm. Cap 2-4 cm, campanulate to thimble-shaped. Upper surface wrinkled to smooth, honey-yellow-brown to red-brown. Cap centrally attached to stem apex, lower surface felted, dingy white.
Stem becoming hollow, fragile, finely felted, white to dingy cream, with horizontal zones of yellow-brown scales, 3-12 x 1-2 cm.
Occurrence
On rich, humus-rich soils under broad-leaved trees and shrubberies (Hawthorn) in broad-leaved woods, shrubberies, parks and kitchen gardens (Strawberries). March to May.
