Half-free Morel
Description
Fruit-body 10-20 cm. Cap usually small in proportion to the stem, 2-6 cm, conical or campanulate, ribs strongly vertically oriented, with few transverse ribs, with shallow pits. Pits honey-brown to olive-brown; ribs dark brown to black. Margin free from stem. Lower surface free until halfway down the stem, white to ochre.
Stem hollow, fragile, thickening at the base, smooth or grooved, with granular scales, dingy white to pale ochrous yellow, 4-15 x 1-4 cm. Flesh white. Taste mild.
Edible.
Occurrence
Solitary or in groups on humus-rich (dug) soil under broad-leaved trees in parks and kitchen gardens. April to May.
