Description
Less than 1cm: Use magnifying glass.
Fruit-body annual, (flattened) funnel- to fan-shaped with central or eccentric stem. Cap Ø 2-25 cm. Upper surface smooth, shiny, dark red-brown with light red-brown to yellowish marginal zone and undulate, acute margin.
Tubes 0.5-2 mm long, decurrent, ochre. Pore 6-8 per mm, circular to angular, white or cream to light brown.
Stem 1-5 x 0.5-2 cm, velvety, brown-black.
Spore-print colour white.

Occurrence
Common on dead branches, trunks and stumps of deciduous trees (Poplar, Willow, Ash, Beech). Spring to autumn.
Saprophyte.
