Description
Less than 1cm: Use magnifying glass.
Fruit-body annual, flattened funnel-shaped with central stem. Cap Ø 2-7 cm. Upper surface faintly zoned, finely felted, grey-brown to red-brown or dark brown, with acute, scored margin.
Tubes 2-4 mm long, somewhat decurrent, creamy white to ochre. Pores 2-3 per mm, circular or angular to elongate, creamy white to ochre.
Stem 1-7 cm x 2-8 mm, finely felted-scaly, brown to grey-brown. Flesh leathery, tough, whitish.
Spore-print colour white.

Occurrence
Common on dead branches, trunks and stumps of deciduous trees (Birch, Ash, Oak, Beech). Winter (see 28.jpg).
