Description
Less than 1cm: Use magnifying glass.
Fruit-body annual to perennial, crust-like, forming strips measuring a few square centimetres to several decimetres in length, 1-10 mm thick, with felted marginal zone. With several tube layers.
Tubes each layer 1-4 mm long, red-brown. Pores 5-6 per mm, circular, yellow-brown to red-brown or grey-brown.
Spore-print colour white.

Occurrence
Not uncommon on trunks and branches of deciduous trees (Oak, Beech, Willow, Hawthorn) on rich soil.
Saprophyte.

Related and/or similar species
Can only be distinguished from Phellinus ferreus with certainty by microscopic features.
