Description
Fruit-body annual, flattened bracket-like, usually imbricate, 3-10 x 2-6 cm, 1-2 cm thick. Upper surface finely felted to smooth, radially wrinkled, occasionally with concentric zones, rusty brown with yellow-white marginal zone, later dark brown to black-brown with acute, paler margin.
Tubes 3-10 mm long, rusty brown. Pores 3-4 per mm, circular to angular, silvery white to yellow-grey.
Spore-print colour yellowish. The bulb-shaped fruit-bodies often exude large guttation drops when young (291B.jpg).

Occurrence
Common on trunks, stumps and branches of deciduous trees (Alder, Birch).
Parasitic.
