Description
Fruit-body slender club-shaped, 3-20 x 0.5-1 cm, hollow. Upper two thirds with obtuse top, matt, ochrous yellow or chamois-coloured to reddish ochrous brown.
Stem matt, ochrous yellow to reddish ochrous brown, with tapering, felted-woolly base.
Occurrence
Fairly common on dead trunks, branches and twigs of deciduous trees (Alder, Birch). The small and squat, occasionally branched variety, Macrotyphula fistulosa var. contorta, occurs on small branches.
Saprophyte.
