Scaly Tooth
(Imbricated Hydnum, Scaly Prickle Fungus, or Tiled Hydnum)
Description
Fruit-body top- to funnel-shaped, up to 9 cm high. Cap Ø 10-20 cm, irregularly round, with large, erect scales in concentric rows, velvety-felted, pale pink to flesh-brown, scales red-brown to dark brown, with rolled in, paler margin. Spines up to 1 mm, whitish to grey-brown or purple brown.
Stem 4-7 x 2-4 cm, velvety, white to brownish. Flesh white. Smell faint, pleasantly spicy.
Spore-print colour brown.
Edible.
Occurrence
Near Fir in coniferous woods on very poor shifting sand deficient in humus.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
