Goblet Scented Spine Fungus


Description
Fruit-body flattened funnel-shaped, often with many caps fused together, up to 4 cm high. Cap Ø 2-6 cm, confluent to Ø 10-20 cm, irregularly round, with fine radial wrinkles, felted, matt, concentrically zoned, turning darker towards the centre, hazel to grey-brown or reddish brown, margin smooth, white. Spines up to 3 mm long, smooth, bright to dark brown.
Stem 1-3 cm x 3-8 mm, smooth, bright to dark brown. Flesh zoned, light brown to red-brown or black-brown. smell spicy, of lovage.
Spore-print colour white.

Occurrence
Occasionally growing in fairy rings. Near Scots pine in coniferous woods on dry, very poor, shifted sandy soil.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
