Description
Cap convex to plane or depressed funnel-shaped, Ø 5-12 cm, felted, matt, sticky when damp, ochrous brown with olive tinge to rusty brown or grey-brown, with incurved, slightly furrowed margin.
Gills close decurrent, pale ochrous yellow to olive-yellow or loam-brown, staining brown on bruising.
Stem 4-8 cm x 8-12 mm, central or slightly eccentric, yellowish pruinose when young, olive-brown to rusty brown, staining brown on bruising. Flesh tough, yellowish white, bruising red-brown. Taste sour. Smell fungus-like.
Poisonous.
Occurrence
Common near deciduous and coniferous trees, occasionally on decayed wood. Summer to autumn.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
Saprophyte.
