Hornbeam Bolete

Description
Cap hemispherical to convex, Ø 4-10 cm, yellow- or grey-brown to brown-black, surface wrinkled, often with irregular cracks.
Tubes whitish, pores young cream-white, then yellowish grey with an olivaceous tinge, turning black on bruising.
Stem 6-8 x 1-3, greyish white with grey to black scales. Flesh white, turning to violet-grey or black on bruising.
Taste mild.
Spore-print colour brownish.

Occurrence
With hornbeams, sometimes with hazel or aspen, in broad-leaved woods, parks and roadsides on calcareous, loamy soil.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
