Description
Cap convex to vaulted, Ø 6-15 cm, downy to smooth, pale cinnamon coloured brown, with a cap membrane hanging over the rim.
Tubes whitish to pale yellowish. Pores small, round, white olive-brown at bruising.
Stem 8-14 x 2-3.5 cm, white to pale brown at the base, covered with (brown-)black to blue-green scales. Flesh white or pink to wine coloured grey, turning brown to black patched. Taste weak. Smell weak.
Spore-print colour dull grey-brown.

Occurrence
Near White and Grey poplars along lanes, along roadsides and woodlands on calcareous clay and sand or loam.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
