Orange Birch Bolete
(Orange Cap Bolete, Red Riding Hood, or Orange Cap Birch Bolete)
Description
Cap hemispherical to convex, Ø 8-20 cm, yellowish orange-brown.
Tubes white to yellowish brown, wine red on bruising. Pores small, grey to ochre, wine red on bruising.
Stem 10-18 x 2-3 cm, whitish grey, covered with woolly, brown-black scales. Flesh white to dark wine-red, blue-green to black in stem base. Taste pleasant. Smell pleasant.
Spore-print colour dark ochrous brown.
Edible.
Occurrence
Near Birch in deciduous and mixed woods and in avenues on poor, dry, sandy or loamy soil. Summer to autumn.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
