Description
Cap hemispherical to convex, Ø 4-14 cm, downy to smooth and shiny, ochrous brown to chestnut or dark reddish black-brown.
Tubes creamy yellow to lemon-yellow, blue-green, turning blue green when damaged. Pores large, creamy yellow to lemon-yellow, blue-greenish on bruising.
Stem 4-12 x 1-4 cm, downy, light ochrous brown to red-brown. Flesh white to lemon-yellow, turning blue-green when bruised. Taste fungus-like. Smell fungus-like.
Spore-print colour olive-brown.
Edible.

Occurrence
Common near deciduous trees (Oak, Beech) and coniferous trees (Fir, Spruce, Larch) in woods on poor, acid, sandy or loamy soil, often in thick litter. Summer to autumn.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
