Scorched Brittle Gill
Description
Cap vaulted to flattened saucer-shaped with a depressed centre, Ø 7-12 cm, matt when dry, dirty white, soon turning dark brown to black, with an enrolled rim.
Gills a little declining, close to each other, whitish to yellowish.
Stem 3-6 x 1.5-3 cm, dirty white to dark brown of black. Flesh white, at bruising turning black. Taste mild to somewhat sharp or bitter. Smell weak.
Spore-print colour white.
Suspect.
Occurrence
Near deciduous trees in deciduous and mixed forests on humig to dry, nutrient deficient to moderately nutrient-rich sand and loam soils.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
Related and/or similar species
A juvenile Russula albonigra is easily mistaken for Russula nigricans.
