Description
Cap convex with deepened centre, Ø 5-15 cm, orange-yellow or orange-brown to red- or chestnut-brown, surface dry, matt, smooth or wrinkled.
Gills dense, shortly decurrent, pale yellow to pale orange-yellow, turning brown when bruised.
Stem 4-12 x 1-4 cm, orange-yellow, sometimes with brown spots. Flesh solid, whitish, milk white, viscid.
Taste mild. Smell fish-like (Herring).
Spore-print colour cream.
Occurrence
With broad-leaved and coniferous trees in woods and avenues on calcareous loam and clay.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
