Description
Cap convex to flattened saucer- or funnel-shaped, Ø 8-20 cm, smooth, ivory to pale yellow, often with wine red blotches, with incurved, downy margin.
Gills close, narrow, decurrent, pale yellowish pink.
Stem 3-7 x 2-4 cm, firm, ivory with wine-red spots, with tapering base. Flesh white, milk white. Taste pungent.
Spore-print colour pink-cream.
Occurrence
Not uncommon near Poplar along roads and dykes on heavy soil and near White Poplar and Salix repens in sand dunes. Occasionally remaining half buried. Often in large groups.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
