Description
Cap vaulted to expanded, Ø 3-7 cm, smooth, velvety shiny, radially fibrous to fine scaly, dark grey with violet or lilac shades to brown grey, with a lighter grey to white, sharp, upcurved rim.
Gills tortuously attached, whitish to grey, with a whitish to black, floccose gill edge.
Stem 3-8 cm x 7-18 mm, smooth, matt, whitish to grey white, covered with brown longitudinal fibres. Flesh grey white, sometimes with a pink tinge. Taste first mild, later burning sharp. Smell earthy.
Occurrence
Near Beeches in deciduous forests and old lanes on calcareous, moderately nutrient-rich river clay or humus rich sand.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
