Brown Roll-rim
(Shii-take, Black Mushroom, or Oak Mushroom)
Description
Cap convex to expanded, Ø 8-20 cm, felted-fibrous, grey-brown to red-brown, with incurved margin with whitish velar scales.
Gills whitish or cream to greyish flesh-brown, staining rusty brown, with serrated edge.
Stem 3-5 cm x 10-13 mm, brown, with large fibrous-woolly scales and a fibrous ring zone, with tapering base. Flesh corky, white. Taste spicy. Smell aromatic.
Edible.
Occurrence
Cultivated indoors and in the open, also in gardens, on dead trunks of deciduous trees (Oak). Imported from East-Asia.
Saprophyte.
Status
Has, in the Netherlands, been encountered growing in the wild a number of times so far.
