Description
Fruit-body growing from a grey-whitish, leathery devil 's egg which develops mostly below the surface, Ø 3-6 cm, rupturing the outer membrane with a disc or egg tooth. Devil 's egg with long, white mycelium strand. Fruit-body 10-25 x 2-4 cm. Upper part conical-campanulate, with dark olive-green slime with a sweetish stench, below that with wide, deep honeycomb-shaped, white, with ring-shaped disc at the apex.
Stem 8-20 x 2-4 cm, spongy, hollow, white.
Edible.
Occurrence
On humus-rich sandy or loamy soil, or on or near strongly decayed wood in woods, shrubberies, parks and gardens. Summer-autumn.
Saprophyte, possibly forming ectomycorrhiza.
