Red Cage Fungus
Description
Fruit-body growing from a dingy white to yellowish, leathery devil 's egg, which develops below the surface, Ø 2-3 cm, is emerging as a balloon-shaped red cage of up to 10-cm in diameter devil s egg with whitish mycelium strand. The fragile bars of the cage are interconnected forming an angular honeycomb shape. They are deep red to yellow red at the base, inner surface reticular grooved and covered with olive-green bait like stinking slime.
Occurrence
On humus-rich soils, in green houses and hotbeds, gardens, often near exotic crops.
Saprophyte.
