Description
Fruit-body spherical to top-shaped, Ø 2-5 cm, with short, tapering stem. Outer surface with evanescent, light to dark brown, pyramidal, pointed spines, leaving a regular, reticular pattern, cream to light or black-brown, with a central opening. Flesh olive-brown.

Occurrence
On somewhat acid, humus-rich soils in broad-leaved and mixed woods (Oak), shrubberies, parks, poor grasslands and sand valleys.
Saprophyte.
