Mosaic Puffball
(Scaly Meadow Puffball)
Description
Fruit-body squat pear-shaped to broad cushion-shaped with narrow base, with broad, short stem, Ø 5-15 cm, up to 15 cm high. Upper part with flat, pyramidal, scaly warts forming a hexagonal pattern, white or cream to pale grey-brown, with parchment-like, grey-brown inner layer. Stem 5-8 cm high, whitish cream to grey-brown, with tapering, pleated base. Flesh olive-brown. Edible.
Occurrence
On usually sandy soil in sparsely manured, dry grasslands, in mossy spots in sand dunes, in broad-leaved and mixed woods and parks.
