Description
Fruit-body broadly dome- to cushion-shaped, with broad, long stem, Ø 5-12 cm, up to 15 cm high. Upper surface with spines, which soon disappear, whitish pale grey to brownish, with paper-like, yellowish inner layer. Stem 7-10 cm high, up to 5 cm thick, with disappearing spines, granular, whitish pale grey to light brown, with hollow, pleated, tapering base. Flesh purple-brown, spongy in the stem, brown. Edible.

Occurrence
Among coarse litter and on especially sandy soils in woods, shrubberies, parks and dry, unmanured grasslands.
Saprophyte.
