Description
Fruit-body perennial, hard, flat to hoof- or console-shaped, widely attached, 5-15 x 5-10 cm and 3-13 cm thick. Upper surface smooth, concentric zoned, radially splitting, grey-brown to black, with a paler, sharp and notched rim.
Tubes up to 25 mm each layer, sepia- to amber-brown. Pores 5-6 each mm, round, grey-brown to cinnamon-coloured or dark brown.
Spore-print colour white.
Occurrence
Single or forming groups on the trunks of live Aspen (Populus tremula), sometimes as "Astkriecher" growing under an oblique branch.
