(Cepe de Bordeaux, or Penny Bun Bolete)
Description
Cap hemispherical to convex, Ø 8-20 cm, matt, pale brown to chestnut.
Tubes white to greyish yellow. Pores circular, whitish.
Stem obese, 3-23 x 3-7 cm, whitish to creamy yellow, upper portion covered with white net. Flesh white. Taste nutty. Smell pleasant.
Spore-print colour olive-brown.
Edible.
Occurrence
Common near deciduous trees (Oak, beech) and coniferous trees, particularly in avenues, roadsides and wood edges on sandy or loamy soil. Summer to autumn.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
