Description
Cap convex to irregularly plane, Ø 7-9 cm, wine-reddish brown or dark violet-brown to reddish, with olive-brown or olive-ochre tinges.
Gills close, white to cream.
Stem 6-8 cm x 10-15 mm, whitish cream. Flesh white. Taste pungent. Smell fruity.
Spore-print colour cream.

Occurrence
Common near deciduous trees, favouring Willow, Alder, Birch, Poplar and Oak. The species was photographed 2 m above the soil on the stump of a Pollard-willow in an osier-bed.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
