Description
Cap convex to plane with depressed centre, Ø 2-5 cm, colour highly variable: purple, violet, purple-red, olive-green, yellowish or combinations of all those, with a paler, furrowed-striped margin.
Gills adnexed, white to pale cream, with serrate edge.
Stem 3-6 cm x 5-15 mm, white. Flesh white. Taste very pungent. Smell fruity.
Spore-print colour whitish.

Occurrence
Common near deciduous and coniferous trees in avenues and woods.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
