Lactarius mairei

Description
Cap convex to plane or depressed funnel-shaped, Ø 2-8 cm, zoned, light to dark cream, with upturned, dark cream to brown, hairy scales protruding over the margin.
Gills thin, close, slightly decurrent, whitish to pale creamy ochre.
Stem 2-6 cm x 5-15 mm, whitish to pale cream, with tapering base. Flesh whitish, milk white. Taste burning hot.
Spore-print colour pale cream.
Not edible.

Occurrence
Near Quercus robur in old deciduous woods and avenues on rich and calcareous river clay.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
