Slimy Volvar
(Smooth Volvar or Rose-gilled Grisette)
Description
Cap egg-shaped to convex or expanded, Ø 6-14 cm, sticky when damp, faded white to pale grey-brown, occasionally with darker greyish to olive-brown, slightly raised centre.
Gills whitish cream to yellowish dingy pink.
Stem 9-22 cm x 7-15 mm, whitish, thickening at the base, which is enclosed in a sac-like, whitish or greyish volva. Flesh white. Smell faint, of garden soil.
Edible.
Occurrence
Common on humus-rich soil, compost and wood chips in parks, gardens and tangled growth, on or along bridle paths, often on disturbed soil. Summer to autumn.
Saprophyte.
