Description
Cap convex to plane with central umbo, Ø 5-12 cm, brown to olive-brown or grey, often with grey-white patches, with striate margin.
Gills distant, white.
Stem 7-14 x 1-2 cm, paler than the cap, with ring-like zones of grey scales, stem base with wide, brittle, whitish to grey volva. Flesh dingy white.
Smell faint.
Spore-print colour white.

Occurrence
Near broad-leaved and coniferous trees in woods on acid, loamy soils.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
