Description
Cap ovoid, then plane with raised centre, Ø 4-9 cm, smooth, orange-brown to red-brown, with striped, pale margin. Gills white.
Stem 7-10 cm x 10-15 mm, smooth, white to cream with orange- brown tinge, with base encased in a large sac-like, membranous, whitish to pale orange-brown volva. Flesh white. Smell faint.
Edible.

Occurrence
Near broad-leaved trees (Birch, Oak, Beech), occasionally near coniferous trees in woods and avenues on sandy soil. Summer to autumn.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
