Death Cap
Description
Cap globose, then expanded to plane, Ø 4-12 cm, smooth, finely radially striped, white (var. alba) to greenish or yellowish with olivaceous sheen.
Stem 7-10 x 1-2 cm, smooth, below the pendulous, membranous, white ring smooth or membranous floccose, around the bulbous base white, with a white to cream volva. Flesh white. Smell sickly sweet. Deadly poisonous.
Occurrence
In broad-leaved woods and avenues, particularly near Oak, on rich soil.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
