Description
Cap ovoid to expanded convex, Ø 10-20 cm, with fibrillose chestnut scales on a yellow-brown background.
Gills independent, white to brown.
Stem 10-20 x 2-4 cm, white, below the big white hanging ring covered scales, which turn brown. Flesh white, turning red. Taste mouldy. Smells of bitter almonds.
Edible.
Occurrence
On humus-rich soil in broad-leaved woods, in road sides and parks, occasionally in coniferous woods, on neutral to calcareous sandy, loamy soil and on clay.
Saprophyte.
