Dune Stinkhorn
Description
Fruit-body growing from a whitish, pink to red-violet-tinted devil 's egg which develops below the surface, Ø 3-6 cm, rupturing the outer membrane with a disc or egg tooth. Devil 's egg with white mycelium strand. Fruit-body 10-15 x 2-3 cm. Upper part conical-campanulate, with dark olive-green slime with a pleasantly sweetish smell, below that with wide, deep honeycomb-shaped, white, with ring-shaped disc at the apex.
Stem 7-11 x 2-3 cm, spongy, hollow, white
Occurrence
On dry, calcareous dune sand deficient in lime, near sea grass in the outer coastal sand dunes. Summer to autumn.
