Common Morel
(Yellow Morel)
Description
Fruit-body 6-25 cm. Cap 5-15 x 4-10 cm, Irregular egg- or pear-shaped to spherical, consisting of deep irregular pits (alveoles), connected by angular ridges. Pits honey-yellow to ochrous-brown or grey-brown; ridges occasionally coloured darker or lighter. Margin attached to stem.
Stem hollow, pleated or grooved at the swollen base, granular or scurfy, white to pale ochrous yellow, 3-11 x 1-5 cm. Flesh pale, elastic. Smell pleasant. Taste mild.
Edible.
Occurrence
Solitary or in groups on roots of trees (Elm, Ash, Beech) and shrubberies, on humus-rich sand, clay and loam in broad-leaved woods, shrubberies and parks, fairly common on coastal sand dunes. April to May.
