Description
Cap hemispherical to convex, Ø 5-15 cm, matt, brown to grey-brown.
Tubes white to dingy ochre. Pores small, white to dingy white, ochrous on bruising.
Stem 7-20 x 2-3 cm, creamy white to grey, covered with brown-black scales. Flesh white to pink, turning blue-green at the base. Taste pleasant. Smell pleasant.
Spore-print colour yellowish brown.
Edible.

Occurrence
Common near Birch in deciduous and mixed woods in coastal sand dunes and on poor, acid soil, often in pathsides and roadsides. summer to autumn.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
