Description
Cap ovoid, then plane with a raised centre, Ø 5-9 cm, smooth, grey to grey-brown (white : var. alba), with striped margin.
Gills close, white.
Stem 13-20 cm x 15-20 mm, smooth, whitish, with a grey-brown tinge, with a sac-like, membranous, greyish volva around the tapered base. Flesh white. Smell faint.
Edible.

Occurrence
In broad-leaved woods and avenues, especially near Poplar (Oak, Birch, Hazel), on clay, loam and rich and/or calcareous sandy soil. Summer-autumn.
Forming ectomycorrhiza.
