Description
Cap conical, then expanded with umbo, Ø 2-4 cm, ochrous yellow or orange – ochre to red-brown to black-brown, adpressed scales and paler at the margin.
Gills cream to ochrous yellow.
Stem 3-5 cm x 2-4 mm, creamy ochre with orange tinge, below the evanescent woolly ring zone with red-brown to dark brown, woolly scales. Flesh cream. Smell unpleasant.
Deadly poisonous.

Occurrence
On humus-rich soils covered with leaf litter in broad-leaved and coniferous woods and in young scrub (Willow and Birch).
Saprophyte.
