Scaly Wood Mushroom
(Brown Wood Mushroom, or Red-staining Mushroom)
Description
Cap convex, Ø 5-10 cm, with ochre to brown fibrils, cracking into pressed scales on a lighter background.
Gills pale reddish to dark brown.
Stem 5-10 cm x 10-15 mm whitish, occasionally with brownish, fibrillose scales below the dingy brown ring. Flesh white, becoming red to brownish. Taste mild. Smell pleasant, spicy.
Edible.
Occurrence
On humus-rich soil in broad-leaved and coniferous woods on rich soil. Summer-autumn.
