A group of sapotrophic, usually short-lived, often fragile Agarics with ovoid to conical caps and deliquescing gills, dripping black inky liquid. Spores brown-black, black. In Britain, more than 100 species of the genus Coprinus occur. A large number of smaller species can only be identified with certainty by microscopic characters of specimens collected when young.
