A small group of fungi with a round or elongated disc-shaped (usually black) stroma. The fruit-bodies rupture through a top layer of leaves and needles on the soil and the bark of branches in the shape of an elongated crack. The group includes species of the genus Rhytisma causing ‘tar-spot’ disease on leaves.
